About

Parish of Saint John

St John Maximovitch Orthodox Church is a parish of the Australia and New Zealand Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, located in Santa Maria, Davao del Sur, Philippines.

In 2013, two Christian communities in the Philippines requested to be received into the Orthodox Church. As there is no autocephalous Orthodox Church in this country, clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia responded, baptized community members, performed weddings, and blessed chapels.

Decree-of-Assignment-large-476x600In 2014, Father Silouan Thompson was assigned by the region’s canonical Metropolitan Hilarion, Archbishop of Sydney, Australia and New Zealand, as rector of the Russian Orthodox parish of Saint John of Shanghai in Santa Maria, with responsibility to do mission work throughout the country.

Today, Father Silouan serves the Liturgy in the Cebuano Language and travels regionally to provide services and catechism for Orthodox Christians and inquirers.

Most of these believers are poor – many live on only a few dollars a day. The cost for a priest to live simply and travel to widely-separated areas of the country is beyond the means of most of the faithful. Father Silouan’s budget comes entirely from donations from the Orthodox faithful in the US, Europe, and Australia. Will you partner with us to make disciples and to firmly plant the Church in the Philippines? May God reward you!
